How to order

Ordering with GeneDx is simple

The GeneDx ordering portal delivers a fast, efficient, secure, and HIPAA-compliant way for you to order genetic tests and access patient test reports.

How ordering genetic testing works

Choose a test

Use the test catalog to search by condition, gene, or indication. Each listing includes recommended use cases, methodology, and sample requirements—helping you select the right test for each patient.

Submit a sample

Request a sample collection kit, collect the sample, and ship it to our lab using the provided materials. Detailed instructions are included with every kit.

Receive results

Results are delivered securely through our online ordering portal, typically within 2–4 weeks1. Each report includes clear findings, interpretation, and clinical guidance to support next steps in care.

GeneDx is committed to making ordering easier for you and your health system. We also offer testing through your Electronic Health Record (EHR) software and through Epic Aura integrations.
Paper test requisition form

While the most efficient way to place an order is through our online ordering portal, orders may also be placed via a paper test requisition form (TRF).

Clinical note

Importance of submitting complete clinical information

Most insurance companies require documentation to establish medical necessity for genetic testing. Additionally, GeneDx requires that same information to initiate exome and genome testing. Documentation with the following information must be submitted with an exome or genome order:

Personal and family history

Why exome/genome is the most appropriate test for your patient based on their personal and family history (e.g., clinical notes and previous test results).

Clinical notes

How testing results could potentially impact management, including explicit details and examples (e.g., clinical notes).

Previous genetic testing

If applicable, documentation that genetic testing was previously performed (e.g., documentation of ordering provider).

Customizable templates

GeneDx offers customizable templates to help you establish medical necessity for exome and genome testing.

In addition to the easy-to-label collection tubes, the kits include:
  • Simple instructions and a QR code to access an instructional video (cheek swab (buccal) kits only).
  • Postage paid FedEx return envelope.
  • Patient informed consent form.

If collecting samples in your office, ask your Client Success Manager to arrange for pick up as soon as possible for prompt processing.

Epic Aura Electronic Health Record (EHR) integrations available

Genetic testing programs

SHANK3 Genetic Testing

Through our Autism Partnership Program, SHANK3 Genetic Testing, eligible patients who meet eight clinical criteria can receive guideline-backed exome testing with financial support. To learn more about this program, including who is eligible and how to order, please visit the program page.
